My little brother loves to stick things like twigs and spoons into hot wax and watching it dry. We’ve been collecting left-over wax in a glass candle jar so that he could heat it up later and play with it. Recently though, I heard from a friend that glass can explode in the microwave. Is this true? I think the glass is heat-resistant, since it’s made for candles, but I’d still rather be safe than sorry.
The candle jar I wish to heat up is from Candle-Lite. (www.candle-lite.com)
if the candle inside has a wick, dont put it in the microwave!….the wick will light.if it is just leftover candle wax…..u can heat it on the stove after u get it out of the candle holder….it takes a lot of effort though…i am not sure if the glass will explode but i would check if it is MICROWAVE SAFE first…..i hope this helps!
make sure its open (the jar)
Glass cannot explode in the microwave. Metal does.
It is because of the natural reflectivity of particles because of the dense metal. Microwaves uses wave particles to vibrate inside food and warm them up. If you heat metal which reflects these waves, it will go back up through the hole which the particles are sent through and then BAM goes your microwave.

FYI, all other objects are safe, like metal, paper, plastic, glass, and Styrofoam, because microwaves can go through all of these substances.
Lol here’s another video of one actually exploding:

Some glass is heat resistant like Pyrex.
If the glass has not been heat treated, then Yes, it will explode
i have had glass in the microwave before and everything was okay
that’s a great hobby…..my hobby is playing in traffic
You should be ok, but do not heat it at top power… maybe heat it at half power.
It can explode if it gets to hot, i will recommend you to be careful because when you heat something up in the microwave , sometimes the container become very hot, i do not think to do this is a good idea, you or your brother could be hurt, specially if you are minors, please do not do it or ask your mom/dad to help you!
well the glass won’t explode, but it could crack depending on how hot it gets and how cold it initially was. basically if it goes from really cold to really hot really fast it’ll break, but i’ve put glass in the microwave lots of times and i’ve never had any problems.
I think it will be okay. The glass that you should NOT put into the microwave oven is crystal, as it may contain lead, which could damage both the glass and the microwave oven.
You could, and yes it could explode. Not likely mind you, but it could.
Here’s the thing, if you put wax into the microwave, there is no guarantee that it will melt. Better option would be to put a pot on the stove filled with water. Then place the candle holder into it and let the water boil. It’ll melt the wax easilly.
As long as it has no lead or metal. If the rim has gold plating NO. If you put a metal spoon inside NO Be very careful playing with melting wax and sticking things in it. If there is a flame involved you can cause a fire. How old are you and your brother? I know someone who burned their house down with this type of playing.
I have tried this before and yes, unfortunately, the heat resistant glass did crack in the microwave. (It, too, was from Candle Lite.) If you’re wanting to release the wax, I would highly suggest letting it soak in very hot water for a while. It may take a while for it all to release from the glass, but I do know this has worked for me in the past. (I used a spoon and a knife to help get the wax off once warmed.)
I hope this helps…Good luck!
It will be fine as long as it is heat-resistant. Make sure that it IS heat-resistant or it will blow up and that’s not good. If it’s NOT heat-resistant then you might want to scoop the wax out and put it into something microwave safe.
