when you look at the reflection of the candle from directly over the flame you see one image but when the viewing angle is shifted a double image is seen. Why?

    You get a reflection from both the front and back surfaces of the glass at the change of the index of refraction at the air/glass surface. Normally the back one is considerably dimmer due to passing through the glass twice.
