my grandmother has this candle holder that looks like a mirror on one side and a magnifying glass on the other and it’s supposed to make the candle light brighter, but i don’t know what it’s called or where to get one? i also would like to have some lamps but the oil ones freak me out a little because i’m afraid they will blow up, haha. any advice on lighting would be much appreciated. thanks.

skinny candles burn too fast and they are much easier to knock over and start fires.

Have u switched all of your lights to energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs yet?

what about those candlestick looking lamps? They have low lighting and would provide a nice ambience, without the mess and stress of candles.

If you have regular carpeting in the house, think twice. Today’s carpeting is highly flammable compared to the wool rugs of your grandmother’s era. We use oil lamps at my sister’s cabin, but the floor is all pine.

I don’t know about your grandmothers’ lamp, but I always use tea-lights at night, and I think that they’re the best, because they don’t fall over, you can put them anywhere as long as they’re on a flame retardant surface, and they are cheap!! They are the only lights that I could possibly leave to burn without worrying about them.

"hurricane lamps" actual name of the things…untipoverable by accident, have to try hard to tip them.

mirrors reflect light, by the way

I was raised with coil oil lamps. Once you get used to them it is just another type of lighting. Using common sense is most important. They arent play things.. It’s called a mirrow light and can be purchased at flea markets and antique places. They are excellent to stand over after taking a shower you can see the nats better.

Hi As a child we had gas lighting in our house but had to use candles in the bedrooms in the next street to us they had no gas, so used oil lamps, I don’t recall any fires in the houses in our street or in the next street, but every one was very careful There are more fires now we all have electricity but most of this is through arsonists, I’m sorry I cant help you with mirror and magnifying glass you asked about

I don’t know what they’re called either, but I wouldn’t trust candles either. I have 17 kerosene lamps in my house, I also do not have kids and only one small dog that can’t reach them. I use mine when I am on the computer, such as now. And the area I live in now experiences frequent power outages. So the lamps really come in handy. If you use oil instead of kerosene it is not as bright as kero. A properly trimmed wick and a clean chimney glass and K-1 water clear kero is all that I ever use. I also have large mirror above my fireplace and I put 4 lamps on the mantle and it lights a 17 X 20 foot room. Just make sure that you check kerosene level every 2 to 3 hours. I really, really would not trust an open flame of a candle..just my opinion…..

The candle lite your talking about are long gone. It seems the romantic of candles and
wine are long gone also. But for a very romantic
night a candle lite supper in the semi dark.is
the best.a lady dressed in the tempting things.and a gleam in her eye.

You can get small flat mirrors pretty cheap… glue them to piece of wood and then place a glass bowl in front of it…. fill the glass bowl with several ….. ten or more candles…..to make a ‘fire pit’ ….. the mirror will reflect the light for you……if you can find something mirrored that can fold around the candles…..or reflect the light up…..that would help also.
If you point the light ‘up’ it will illuminate the room.
