The first thing is to learn all you can about candle making and then don’t sell them… distribute them. Don’t market them as candles but rather present the features and benefits of the products. Think "mood," "illumination," "glow" and "romance" instead of just a source of light in a blackout. Make people WANT your candles instead of the 25 cent ones at the drug store. Think of branding yourself in candles like Coach does for purses or Godiva does for chocolate. With that in mind, you will have much more chance for success. Consider partnering with local gift shops and maybe a website to display your products. It’s one thing to make candles but another to get them into the hands of those who want or need the products.

Now, as for the startup there are many books at your library that can help you uncover information on permits, taxes, accounting, legal entities, funding, insurance needs, and other necessities for a legitimate business. Check out Entrepreneur and Home Business Magazine for appropriate articles. Watch "Your Business" on MSNBC on weekend early mornings … or tape them. There are many websites that can help as well. See links below.

Light candles at a stall and yell, "BUY MY CANDLES!!"
