I’m considering making candles and selling them because I need some extra cash. One, is candle making profitable? And where can I buy the things I need to make candles?
You will need to make a considerable upfront investment in wax, wicks, molds and fragrance oils. It also is not quite as easy as you might thing to make a good quality candle so you will probably throw out a lot of "mistakes" while you perfect your skills. You will also probably need to get a manufacturing license, business license and good liability insurance (a candle that is not made correctly could start a fire and you could be sued!). Then you will need to spend more time and money to create a catalog or brochures, website and other marketing to reach potential customers. Remember you don’t make money from a product until you sell it at a profit.
Since there are only so many hours in a day, it would probably be easier and more profitable to become a candle distributor/rep/consultant for a candle company and spend all of your time doing the part that is where the profit is made – marketing and selling products!
Becoming a rep or distributor requires a small initial investment to buy a few products to show people and from then on you can mostly take orders so your expenses can kept pretty minimal instead of spending time and money making your own products that may not sell. The company will have already spent the money to do the research to create a good quality product, they have all of the manufacturing permits, liability insurance, marketing materials (like catalogs, a website, etc.), some name brand recognition and a customer base.
