I made candles for my kids’ teachers for Christmas gifts, and it was very easy! The simplest way is to use wax beads that you can buy in most craft stores. These are made especially for candle making. Mix the beads with fragrance oil (also sold in craft stores) and pour the scented beads into the container of your choice. I’ve used pretty teacups, jars, etc. that I found at thrift stores. The beads generally come with wicks that you just poke into a hole in the beads.
These come out really pretty and you can customize with different colors of beads, scent combinations, containers, etc.

You need a double boiler (one pot inside another pot full of water) to melt the wax/gel, a thermometer, wax/gel, a mold, wicks, color and scent if desired and for gel candles containers. It sounds like a lot of stuff, but it’s really not. Most of it goes a long way and it’s a fun hobby.
Soap making can be a little trickier. Although getting some of the melt and pour stuff to play with it fun. You can add all kinds of herbs, scents and colors to it. You can also embed toys in the soaps for great kid’s gifts.
