We’re having a Christmas themed wedding and our colors are red and white with silver accents. We already have hurricane vases, but I’m not quite sure what to do with them. They are the kind without a bottom, so I planned on getting the little mirrors to go under them.

Option A) Red Pillar candle with twigs painted silver (maybe some holly berries on them) somehow wrapped around inside of the vase. But I’m not sure what type of twigs I could use that would be flexible. Any ideas?

Option B) White pillar candle with cranberries filling up the vase about half way up

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Those are just the only things I can think of.

    Go with option B.

Option A sounds nice, but I don’t like the idea of the twigs inside the vase AND the candle. Sounds dangerous.

Option B would fit nicely with your colors and the season. I have seen a picture of this exact centerpiece before. Very classy and elegant.

I like option B. You could also paint small tree branches white and place them in the cranberries instead of the candle and then hang crystals from the branches. You could also get a small battery powered string of lights (with the white cord not the green), bunch it up and put it in the vase along with the cranberries, or those little glass pebbles, some tulle, or use glass frost spray and have the lights in the vase to give it a glow.

How about option B with silver twigs layed outside it on the table. Sounds very pretty and cranberries are beautiful. You could also fill the vases with cranberries and water then put a floating candle in.

Filling vases with nonconventional items is very big lately, and quite pretty. One thing that comes to mind is filling your hurricanes with blown-glass ornaments:

Here’s an example that combines ornaments in vases with the ever popular branch tree:

Another idea is incorporating wreaths around candles. Observe:

Finally, here’s one that incorporates both ideas:

I like both ideas, very nice. I love red and white, I have a lot of it. My favorite from a couple years ago was a red and white candy stripe pillar candle. They make plastic twigs and branches that might work, check out your local craft store or craft/ fake flower department at places like Target or Walmart.
They make plastic shapes for the purpose of filling a vase like you said, instead of the cranberries. and prisms or crystals would be pretty, too.
But know there are commercially made candle rings out there in several sizes. It might be easier for you to buy, rather than make them .
Another good idea is to go to one or more of the florist’s sites, like FTD, and look at their designs. I bought a pillar candle and globe with some greenery and ornaments around it for a gift for an Aunt last year, I think it could be easily duplicated.
Using a styrofoam form is great, they make them in flat bottom circle shapes for just what you need. But, they are flammable, and melt, so they can’t be anywhere near heat, or even a warm globe.
Michael’s and Hobby Lobby should have what you need.
Also consider checking out picks. they are little corsages attached to a heavy wire that can be stuck into a form. they can be as inexpensive as 3 for a dollar. Again check out the craft stores and see what they have. They have geometric shapes, pine cones, ornaments, leaves, all sorts of picks.
One more: Martha Stewart took whole cranberries, broke a toothpick in half, stuck the broken half into the cranberry, and the other half went into a styrofoam form, she did wreaths and tree shaped topiaries. Very cute, and cheap. Her website would have pictures.
Also, you might consider buying some museum gel to stick your globe onto your mirror. It would not tip over as easy, and you would not have to worry about cranberries pouring out of it if tipped. It is clear, and pliable, and it just takes a tiny bit to secure things. It follows the shape of the bottom of whatever you are sticking it to. I typed it into the Yahoo browser and got a bunch of places to order it from. I use it at home as earthquake damage prevention.
