I keep hearing that soy candles don’t produce the toxins and soot that other candles do. I love to burn them, but have been told they are horrible for the house and the air we’re breathing. Is that true?
Yes, candles made from natural vegetable wax (including but not limited to soy) do not release the toxins and pollution that are released when paraffin candles are burned. Unless specifically labeled otherwise candles are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin is a petroleum-based product that releases toxins and pollution similar to car exhaust. So if you look for candles that are made from 100% vegetable wax they will be much healthier. You will be amazed at how clean most brands burn!
Also check the wicks to make sure they do not have a metal core. Metal core wicks can also release toxins, so look for wicks that are 100% cotton.
I always thought the main purpose of soy candles was for vegans who don’t want to use the regular candles because they often contain beeswax or other animal products.
