Votive candles are 3 inch pillar candles, they are not as large as taper candles, and not as small as tealight candles. Although certain spells may recommend a certain sized candle, any size can be used in candle magick. I practice it myself, and I use either a votive or a tealight candle, and I have found them to be equally effective. If you do not have a votive candle and cannot buy one, do not be afraid to use another candle in your spell. All that is required is your energy in candle magick.
A votive candle is a small candle that fits into a small (usually glass) container. Votive only refers to the size. Larger than a tea light but smaller than a regular candle.

A votive candle is the medium sized ones. They have a cylindrical shape and are usually kind of "fat" looking. A tea light is a small candle that’s usually in a tin holder; and a "normal" candle your talking about is called a taper.
…Well, in Catholicism votive candles are candles, usually in glass jars, that have an image of a saint or Christ on them. You burn them while you pray as a way to focus. They’re often blessed, and candles have a Christ-symbolism to us.
Obviously a Catholic votive candle wouldn’t be used for a spell, but maybe there’s something similar in your religion.
Votives are small candles, usually about 3 inches high.
